Background: The birth plan is a written document prepared by the pregnant woman and/or the couple that expresses their preferences regarding the birth. Research has shown that it promotes education, female empowerment and the active and effective participation of women in their births, contributing to a positive and satisfying birth experience. Although it is widely recognized, the implementation of the birth plan remains controversial, with inconsistencies in the literature and resistance from health institutions.
Objetive: Map the available evidence about the influence of the birth plan on the woman's satisfaction with her labor and childbirth.
Method: This scoping review was developed according to the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The search was carried out in May 2021 and updated in July 2021, using the CINALH and MEDLINE databases and the gray literature
Results: Eight relevant articles that met the inclusion criteria were included. The majority (n=5) concluded that the use of the birth plan positively influences women's satisfaction with their labor and childbirth.
Conclusion: Given the evidence that supports the birth plan as a strategy that promotes a more positive and satisfying birth experience, its promotion by the midwife is essential. Producing more knowledge about the birth plan can contribute to the implementation of care models that favor positive and humanized childbirth experiences.
Keywords: Birth plan; Satisfaction; Women; Labor Obstetric; Childbirth.
