Abstract

Background: Labor is an inimitable, unique and exciting process for the woman who experiences it. Several national and international organizations recommend mobility and the adoption of vertical postures as beneficial practices in the dynamics of the first stage of labor.

Objective: Identify the scientific evidence on the influence of mobility and the adoption of vertical postures on the duration of the 1st stage of labor.

Method: An integrative literature review was carried out by searching online bibliographic databases. Two independent reviewers performed the relevance of the articles, the extraction and synthesis of the data.

Results: From the research (337 articles) twelve articles were obtained for analysis, which demonstrated almost unanimously that maternal mobility and the adoption of vertical postures during the first stage of labor shorten the duration of this stage.

Conclusion: Despite the consensus found, the heterogeneity of the studies analyzed regarding the number of participants and type of interventions requires attention in the interpretation of results and points to the need for more studies on the subject.
